A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wire from Carlisle came through at ten to four, and Ada Pell copied it onto the pad with the lamp turned low so the others on the night desk would not see her hand shake. It was addressed to a fishing widow in Whitby, and it said only that the boat had been found upturned off the Scar and that no one aboard had been found at all. Ada had been sending and receiving for nine winters. She knew how to keep her face still. What she could not keep still was the sentence she had sworn to herself she would never write down, the one about the lamp in the Carlisle window that her brother used to leave burning when he went out after the herring.

She took the message down the stairs herself, though it was not her round. The widow's door was open before she knocked. Mrs Harland read it with her lips moving, the way the old ones do, and then folded it very small, as if it might be made less true by being smaller.

On the walk back up the cobbles Ada passed the chapel and saw the light was still on in the vestry, a single long line of yellow across the wet stones. She thought of her brother's lamp, and of how the glass had always caught a little fire along its edge where the wick had burned crooked. She stopped under the lamp-post by the harbour wall and wrote on the back of her left glove, in pencil, the only word she could think of that belonged to all of it: dream. Then she went back to the key and tapped out the reply, which was no reply at all, just the widow's name and the word that meant the wire was received and understood.
