Dream script with floral flourishes

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A drawing of the word dream in a flowing black script, with grey scrolls and small leaves extending from both ends of the word and curling beneath it. The lettering uses smooth, solid strokes, while the flourishes are finer, thinner lines with subtle leaf shapes. The design is centred on a plain white background and uses only black and grey.

The seed catalogue came in the second week of February, damp at one corner where the postman had leaned it against the gate. She had meant to plant the white clematis along the south wall, the one that climbed the way ivy does, looping back on itself until it found the gutter. Instead she dug out the old bed by the pond, where the foxgloves had gone to seed, and she laid the rooting cuttings in rows the way Tom used to, measured with a bamboo cane. The soil was cold and smelled of iron. A blackbird watched her from the holly and did not seem to think much of her plans.

By April the shoots had found the wire and were turning on themselves in small, deliberate curls, reaching out past the trellis as if they had somewhere else to be. She stopped kneeling to let her knees rest and saw, for the first time since the funeral, that the tendrils had written something across the fence in the morning light. It was not a word. It was only the shape a word might make if you let it run on past what you had asked of it.

She left the kettle cold and went out in her slippers to see what else the garden was trying to say.
