Dreaming is believing in flowing script
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A handwritten phrase, dreaming is believing, is drawn in black ink in a flowing cursive script that runs diagonally from upper left to lower right. The linework is even and monoline, with looped connecting strokes and decorative tails on the initial letters. The plain cream background and the absence of any colour make the design look like a simple stencil or sketch.

Odette Pryce had lettered signs for the Saturday market at Halford for thirty-one years, and she knew by the sound of the rain on her awning whether a card would survive the morning. This one was cardboard, propped on her trestle, and the wind kept lifting its corner. Dev from the record stall had asked for something that didn't look like a shop, so she had reached for the fine nib and her black ink and let the letters lean.

She ran the line downhill on purpose, from the top left corner to the bottom right, the way a boat slides off a slipway once the ropes are cast. The loops on the d and the b reached out like the ends of a skipping rope. Each connecting stroke kept the same weight as the last, because a hand that trembles is a hand in a hurry, and she had never been in a hurry for anything but the kettle.
At half eleven a girl of about nine stopped in the wet with a carrier bag over her head. She stood on her toes to read it, moving her lips over the joined letters. "Dreaming is believing," she said. "Is that a rule or a wish?"
Odette wiped her fingers on her apron. "Depends who's asking," she said. "Mostly it's a wish that's learned to wait." The girl considered this, then pointed at the gap where the i had come out heavier than the rest. "It's smudged."
When she had gone, Odette looked at the card and saw that the ink had bled only where the loops turned back on themselves, so the words now looked as though someone had traced them twice. She decided to leave it.
