A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tobias had been told three times to keep out of the north tower, so he was lying flat on the cold flags with his cheek to the stone when the mouse came out of the mortar. It was no bigger than a walnut and had ears like two coins pressed flat. It did not run. It sat on the sill and looked at the crack where the morning came through, as if it had an appointment there.

Tobias knew the old tale the cook sang when the ale ran low. The lord's daughter had been locked in that tower for dreaming of the sea, and the mice had carried her thoughts out through the gaps one grain at a time. Nobody believed it. Nobody had ever seen a mouse sit still for so long.

'Go on, then,' he said, which was foolish, because the mouse was already stepping along the ledge toward a line of words scratched into the lime by someone long dead. Never stop, the words said, and a thin thread of letters ran on past the broken edge of the wall, dreaming, and out into the bright air where the moat used to be. The mouse reached the last letter and stopped. Tobias saw then that the scratches went on, faint as a hair, across the whole gap to the far tower, and that somebody had walked it every night for a hundred years, one careful step at a time, to carry the lord's daughter her answer.

He took up his chisel and began the next letter, and he did not stop until the bell rang for supper.
