Sugar skull portrait with peony
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A stylised woman with sugar skull face make-up and curled, vintage-style hair sits inside an oval floral frame. She holds a small bottle in a skeletal hand, with a large peony and smaller leaves at the bottom of the composition. The fine pink linework uses stippled shading on the face and hair, over a pale watercolour-style wash.

Sit down before the kettle boils over, and keep your hands where I can see them. No, the bottle stays on the shelf. That's the one Marrow Ada kept. She was the last keeper of the seed-glass in the old cloisters of Hollin, and every feast day she painted her face in white and black so the orchard children would know she still belonged to their side of the wall.

After the Long Frost the council sealed the peonies behind the cloister gates and called flowers a luxury for people with nothing better to spend their ration on. Ada didn't argue. She filled a small stoppered bottle with the last of the pollen, pinned her grandmother's cameo inside her collar, and walked it out under her coat past three checkpoints, one lamp at a time.
At the gatehouse, a boy named Tobiah Rendle stopped her. He had a rifle that had never been fired and a mother who sold seed on the black market. He asked what she was hiding. Ada held the bottle up, and in the lamplight the pollen turned the colour of a sky just before rain. "Only the dead's hair ribbon," she said. "Let me through, and I'll bring you a bloom in spring." He laughed, waved her on, and forgot all about it until the thaw, when a single peony pushed up through the cracked tarmac of the gatehouse yard, fat and pink as a fist.
They still call it Peony Gate. Tobiah grew old keeping that bush alive, and his granddaughter still paints a little white face on the bottle every feast day, just in case. Now pour me that tea, and mind the petals. They always end up in the cup.
