E.T. and the moon on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the alien E.T. from the film, with his face framed by a light blanket in the foreground. Behind him is a large full moon with a silhouette of a figure on a bicycle, set against a deep purple and blue night sky with scattered stars. The shading is smooth and detailed with soft gradients, and the colour palette is dominated by blues, purples and browns.

The creature had been living in the airing cupboard for nine days before Owen noticed the towels were folded the wrong way, and by then it had eaten most of his gran's damson jam straight from the jar. Nan Dilys found it first, or said she did, and rather than ring anyone she put a second blanket on the landing and pretended the hot water had gone off.

It had a face like a walnut left out in the rain, and it spoke in clicks and a low hum that rose when it was pleased. Owen learned its word for home by pointing at the window. Every evening it pressed its long fingers to the glass and stared at the moon over the Medway marshes, then sank back under the eiderdown whenever Mum's boyfriend's van turned into the close.
On the ninth night Owen wheeled his old green bicycle out of the shed, its bell rusted silent. The creature climbed into the front basket wrapped in Nan's cream blanket, and Owen pushed off down the hill, past the dark church and up the chalk track toward Cobb's Hill. At the top the moon was so full and close it looked like a dinner plate someone had forgotten to wash. The bicycle lifted as if the chalk had let go of it, and the wheels turned slowly against a sky crowded with stars.
Owen woke in his own bed at seven with mud on his socks. The airing cupboard was empty except for a single plum stone on the shelf, and Nan was humming in the kitchen as if nothing had happened. He never saw the creature again, but he still checks the sky every night, and when the moon is full he leaves the bedroom window open an inch, just in case someone needs a lift home.
