Realistic monkey and snake on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A realistic colour tattoo of a monkey's face with wrinkled skin, orange-red eyes and an open mouth. A blue and orange snake coils over the top of the head and curls around the design. Soft blending and fine fur-like strokes give the piece depth, with the colours set against the skin of the upper arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Vesna had sold the van twice and still it would not stop smelling of oranges. The monkey, Tobin, sat on the dashboard with his long grey fingers folded like a clerk's, watching the road shimmer into nothing. Behind them, in a biscuit tin with holes punched in the lid, the snake shifted and knocked against the tin wall. Nobody had warned her that the stretch between Tonopah and Ely was so long, or that a hired van would give up with the needle on empty and the sun sitting on the bonnet like a hot coin.

She walked. Tobin walked beside her on his knuckles, which he only did when he was thinking, and the tin swung from her fingers. The tarmac gave back the heat in waves, and every car that passed left a gust of dust and no slowing. Then an old Ford with a dog in the back pulled onto the verge, and a man with a sunburnt neck leaned out and asked what she was carrying that smelled like a cupboard full of pears.

He was called Lyle, and he had once driven for a travelling show that kept a chimpanzee and a python in the same caravan, which he said was a mistake nobody repeated. When Vesna lifted the lid, the snake lifted its head, blue as a gas flame, and looked straight past her at Tobin. Tobin climbed down, slow and careful, and let it wind up his arm and over his shoulder until its head rested beside his own, both of them watching the road as though it owed them money.

They drove the last forty miles with the windows down. Vesna sat in the back with the empty tin on her knees, and in the rear-view mirror she could see Tobin's orange eyes glowing from the front seat, the snake looped about him like a second, colder mind.
