Furry creature with red headband on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A large, detailed portrait of a furry creature with big dark eyes, a pale snout and a red headband, with a hand or paw resting at the bottom of the design. The fur is rendered with fine, layered strokes and soft shading, and the eyes have bright highlights that give them depth. Red, brown and cream tones dominate against a blurred blue-grey background, with smooth gradients across the composition.

Put the kettle back on, Anja, and listen, because the wind won't carry this twice. Every shepherd who crossed Hallow Col in the old winters knew the small one that lived under the cairn at the top. It was no bigger than a loaf, cream-furred and grey at the ears, with eyes so wide and wet that a man would forget his dog. It wore a red wool band across its brow, which a dead sheep-wife had knitted and left on the stones.

The summer Bram Tolley lost his flock in the snow, he climbed to the cairn meaning to die sensibly, as men do. He found the creature sitting on the lip of the drift with one thin paw stretched out, holding a lantern wick it had pulled from somewhere. It did not run. It only looked at him with those glassy eyes and pointed down the gully, where a dark line of sheep stood huddled behind a rock.
Bram followed. The creature went ahead, stopping every few yards to glance back, the red band bright against the white. When they reached the low fold above Ravensmere, the beasts were alive, stamping and steaming, and the little one was gone. Bram wrapped the wick in his coat and kept it there for forty years.
Every spring after, a fresh ball of red wool appeared on the cairn, and every spring the lambs came down strong. So if you cross the Col in fog, leave a crust on the stones and do not whistle. It hates whistling. Now bank the fire, and mind the door.
