Black and grey realism eagle tattoo with a Harley-Davidson bar and shield logo on a man's upper arm.

Eagle and bar and shield logo on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A man in a white vest tank top shows a large tattoo on his upper arm. The design combines a Harley-Davidson bar and shield logo above a black and grey eagle in flight, with its wings spread and talons extended. The eagle is shaded with fine feather detail and soft tonal gradients, and the image is a side view against green foliage.

The officer at Sallow Bridge turned my passport over twice, as if the stamps might rearrange themselves if he waited. "Anything to declare?" he asked. I had a rolled oilcloth under the pannier, and inside it was the badge I'd unbolted from Grandad Emil's old machine the week the marsh road flooded for good: a black bar and shield, the lettering worn down to a ghost, and beneath it a pressed-steel eagle with its wings thrown wide.

Emil rode that bike across the flats for forty years, carrying eggs and gossip to farms that couldn't reach the town. He used to say an eagle hunts from height because it can see the road both ways at once, and that a man on two wheels needed the same trick. He'd tap the tank whenever we reached a fork, and I'd tell him which way the crows were flying, because I was seven and believed I was helping.

The officer unrolled the oilcloth across the ledge of his booth. He didn't touch the eagle at first. Then he traced one wing with a fingertip, the way you might check a child for fever. "My father had one of these," he said. "Left it on a hook in the garage when he went. Never could bring myself to sell it." He folded the cloth back over, carefully, and handed me my passport.

The barrier rose. I didn't ride off straight away. I sat with the engine ticking and watched the sun catch the sharp edge of that eagle's talons through the oilcloth in my lap, just as it had caught them on Emil's tank, and I thought about the road going both ways at once.
