Feathered headdress design drawing
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a detailed drawing of a feathered headdress in profile, with long layered feathers fanning out to the right and fringed strands hanging down on the left. The linework is fine and the feather barbs are shaded in greys and deep blacks, with soft wash-like splashes around the edges. The design is set on a plain white background with no colour.

Mrs Okonedo had the headdress flat across two trestle tables in the costume loft above the Corn Exchange, and the first thing she did was count the feathers she could still save. Forty-one. The rest had gone to moth and damp over a winter nobody had bothered to ventilate, leaving bare quills like the ribs of a dead umbrella.

She worked with a bowl of thinned glue and a tray of replacement plumes bought from a supplier in Walsall, grey and black to match the old ones. The trick, she had told the apprentice, was to respect the barbs: lift each feather, comb the edge apart with a pin, and slide the new one under the old so the eye never found the join. The fringe needed more patience. Strands of leather hung from the browband, and between them ran a row of small glass beads, a few cracked, most still bright. She threaded them back one at a time while the radio in the corner murmured about fog coming down over the Pennines.
By Friday the piece looked nearly whole again, sweeping out to the right like a flock of gulls turning in one direction. The director came up the stairs to collect it and stood in the doorway, quiet for once. "It's heavier than I remembered," he said. Mrs Okonedo smiled and folded a sheet of tissue over the crown. "Every feather in it is the right weight," she said. "Somebody paid attention to that once. I was only trying to keep up."
