Eiffel Tower behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of the Eiffel Tower in black ink sits on the skin behind an ear, with hair visible at the edge of the frame. The tower is drawn in thin, open lattice linework with a short spire and a tapered base, and the design is shown in sharp focus against soft, pale skin. The composition is a close crop centred on the tattoo, with no shading or colour apart from the black ink.

Sit still, pet, the 4.12 is late again and I've not finished. You want to know how a lattice of iron got itself inked where nobody sees it? Then listen. Forty years back the lamp man on this platform was Teddy Quayle, who could hear a train before the rails began to hum. He kept a postcard of the Eiffel Tower wedged in his cap band, sent by a sister who had gone to Paris to sew for a couture house and never wrote a second time.

Every Thursday Teddy climbed the footbridge, lit the lamps one by one, and counted the spans out loud. Eleven spans, one for each year she'd been gone. Nobody thought him soft. Maureen in the ticket office said he was waiting on a telegram that would never come, and Teddy said a telegram was a poor way to tell a person you were alive. A postcard was better, he said, because it had to be bought, and bought meant somebody had stood in a shop and thought of you.
Then one wet November a young woman stepped off the 4.12 with a postcard held in her gloved hand. Same tower, same grey ink, corners gone soft as cloth. She had found it in her mother's drawer in Lyon, addressed to the lamp man at this station and never posted. Teddy took it from her, turned it over, and read his own sentence back in his own hand: Come home when the tower is finished with you.
He lit the twelfth lamp that night and did not count the spans. Some things, he told her, you only need to be near enough to hear.
