Cat and paw prints behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework cat in profile sits behind the ear, with its long tail sweeping down the skin. Two solid black paw prints lead down from beneath the cat, and small strokes near its head suggest whiskers or motion. The ink is uniform black on pale skin, with the ear and reddish hair visible at the edges of the frame.

The prints were fresh. Marjorie crouched on the third step of the north stair, where the dust lay as thin as flour, and counted four toes and a pad on each, leading up towards the broken arch where the chapel roof had come down in the winter of the big storm. Somebody had been feeding the cat, or the cat had been feeding itself, which in Carrow Keep amounted to the same thing.

She had come up with the survey chain and a clipboard, meant to record the wall for the trust that wanted to sell the ruin to a hotel company from Bristol. Her father had kept the keys before her, and his father before that, and none of them had ever mentioned a cat. Yet every morning there were prints, and every evening the bowl at the foot of the arch was licked clean, and once she had glimpsed a long black tail slipping between the stones like a ribbon being drawn back up.

On Friday she left the chain at the bottom of the stair and climbed alone with a saucer of cold mackerel. The cat was waiting on the parapet, tail curled over the drop, and it turned its head in profile against the grey sky, whiskers twitching as if it had been listening for her all along. She set the saucer down and did not look at the clipboard again.

The survey was never filed. The hotel company asked for the section marked north stair, and the trust received a letter saying the upper levels were unsafe, and nobody argued. Marjorie still walks up on Tuesdays. The prints lead her up each time, and at the top there is always a little more daylight than there was before.
