Mr Pallister had gone home to his tea, and I was meant to keep the lines open for the doctor and the fire brigade, and nothing else.

At twenty to six a bolt came down the hill and struck the pole outside the chapel. The whole board jumped. Lamps went out in three rows of plugs, and a thin blue crack ran along the wire where it entered the wall, bright as a pencil line on blotting paper. I smelled hot copper, and when the lamps came back the Sutcliffe line was open to nobody at all.
Dolly Sutcliffe had been ringing her husband at the quarry for an hour. I patched her through by hand, and his voice came down the wire as clear as church bells. I did not tell her that the strike had scorched a mark into the pole as fine as a hair, a zigzag you could trace with one finger. Instead, the next morning, I drew it for my nephew on the back of a telegram form, the way it had looked against the sky.
He asked whether it hurt the wire. I said lightning always goes where it is least expected, then straight home. The pole still stands by the chapel gate, and the children dare each other to touch the black mark, and none of them ever does.
