Eiffel Tower behind the ear

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of the Eiffel Tower sits on the skin behind an ear. The lines are thin and open, with a simple lattice pattern on the tower's lower legs and a narrow spire at the top. The tattoo is shown in close crop against dark hair, and a hoop and cartilage piercing are visible on the ear.

The fair came to Hollin Green the week after the lambing, and with it came Tobiah Crane, who sold tin charms from a trunk with a brass lock. He carried a small iron tower no taller than a man's forearm, its legs crossed in a lattice like a fishing net. Mothers told their children not to touch it. Girls were allowed to hold it for a penny.

Nell Marrow was nine and had never been past the market town. She paid her penny every evening for a fortnight, turning the tower in her palm and tracing the open ironwork until the lamplight caught it. On the last night she asked him how tall the real one was. He said it was taller than any church in England and that its spire poked through the clouds on wet days. She asked whether a person could climb it. He said only if they were patient enough to count every step.

When the fair packed up at dawn, the trunk was gone and so was the tower, though nobody saw him leave. Nell found a handkerchief on her windowsill with a slip of paper folded inside it: Count the steps, and you will be where I am.

She kept it for sixty years. At the end of her life she would still say the spire was the thinnest thing she had ever held, and that the crossed legs were there so the wind could pass through.
