The menagerie barge had tied up below the lock with its tarpaulins snapping, and everyone in the village had a theory about the animal inside the long crate marked THIS WAY UP. A camel, said the miller. A bear with a grievance, said his wife.

On the fourth morning the tarpaulin came off and the giraffe stood up into the fog like a question nobody had asked. Its keeper, a thin woman called Ada Lusk who smoked roll-ups and never once looked at the crowd, walked it slowly along the bank. The creature bent its neck to nibble the top of the willow, and Tobias saw for the first time what the village looked like from above: the chimneys, the church tower, the roof of the Bell where his father drank.

That afternoon he climbed the lock gate with a bucket of apple cores he had stolen from his mother's bin. The giraffe came over, dark against the white sky, its shadow laid flat across the water like a cut-out. Ada watched him from the path. "Don't feed her from the top," she said. "She's got opinions about height." He laughed and nearly fell, and the animal lowered its head to him anyway.

When the barge left at dawn, the frost on the towpath held a long, neat outline where the giraffe had stood. Tobias went down with a stick and drew around it, then sat in the cold and tried to work out how to get back up.
