Arrow designs with arrowheads and fletching
Black and grey · Flash
The sheet shows three vertical arrows drawn in simple black outline, each with layered chevron or feathered fletching at the top and a different pointed head at the bottom. Six small arrowhead variants run across the top edge, with varying barb shapes and proportions. The drawing uses uniform, clean strokes on a plain off-white background, with the arrows evenly spaced down the centre of the composition.

The wind off the Hollin Gap comes up the valley at dusk, and the goats know it before you do, so you bring the bundle in from the step and lay the shafts across the trestle where the lamp will reach them. Your uncle Anselm always said a fletcher starts with the feathers, not the wood. Sort the grey goose from the brown, he would say, and pull any feather whose vane has split, because a split vane pulls an arrow sideways in a crosswind, and a man on the ridge pays for your laziness.

Tonight there are three shafts to finish for the captain of the pass watch, who wants them before the thaw. He has sent you a drawing on the back of a tax receipt: three arrows, one fletched in a tight layered sweep, one in a fuller feathering, one in a plain chevron. Each has a different head. The smallest, a barbed leaf, is for hares. The diamond is for the valley road. The shield-shaped point, you suspect, is for something he will not name.
You fix the heads with hide glue and bind the joints in waxed thread, and somewhere past midnight the glue sets hard enough that you can lift a shaft and sight down it against the lamp. It is true. Anselm would have grunted and gone back to sleep.
At dawn you carry the three up the path to the watch-house, and the captain turns the diamond head over in his fingers, then looks at you properly for the first time. "Your uncle fletched by feel," he says. "You fletch by the book." You do not tell him the book was Anselm's, drawn out again and again by a lamp that is now out, and that you have never once missed.
