Three arrows in line drawing
Black and grey · Flash
Three arrows are drawn one above another, each with a different arrowhead and feathered fletching. The linework is black and sketchy, with hatching on the fletching and shaft bands and some solid black fills. The arrows are evenly spaced across a plain white background, with no body or skin visible.

Ada Mercer had been dressing arrows in the byre since the first hard frost, the lamp hung from a nail so she could see the grain. Three shafts lay on the bench for Tobias Pell, who meant to shoot them at the Candlemas butts and not a day before, because he was a man who liked an audience.

The first had a barbed head, forged by Gil at the smithy on Harrow Lane and bound at the socket with waxed thread. The second carried a leaf-shaped point for deer, and she had wrapped its shaft in strips of hide where a hand would close around it. The third she had fletched herself with three black crow feathers, trimmed and hatched with a bone knife until they lay as flat as ink on paper.
Pell came up the lane with snow on his shoulders and asked which one was true. She told him the straight one, the one with the crow. He laughed and said crows were for scarecrows, and she did not argue. Instead she told him the farmer's girl had sold her the whole wing for a penny, and that every bird in the hedge had watched her do it, and that a crow remembers a face longer than a man does.
He took all three and shot none of them that winter. In March the lamp still hung in the byre, and when she went to take it down she found the crow arrow lying on the bench, fletching turned toward the door, as though someone had been waiting to see whether she would come back for it. She left it where it lay and let the frost come in.
