Set of arrow tattoo designs

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a column of twelve arrow designs drawn on a plain white background, each with a different arrowhead and fletching shape. The linework is thin and even, with some arrowheads and feathers filled in solid black or shaded in grey. The arrows alternate direction and are offset from one another, giving a balanced, repeating composition.

Dear Tomas, The frost came early to Harrowgate this year and the river has gone quiet under its skin. I have been at the bench since Michaelmas, because the mill owes Captain Pryce eleven dozen shafts and Dad's hands are no good for feathers now. Enclosed are the twelve I could not sell. I kept them back, each one different, because you always said no two birds should be fletched alike.

Look at the first one, the black head with its barbs bent back like a hedge in a gale. Dad made that the spring you went south. He would not put a proper point on it and said it was for a man who would know what it was for. The one beneath it, pale and hollow, with a triangle that never quite sharpens, is mine. I cut it wrong four times before the wood agreed with me.

The rest alternate left and right, the way Dad taught us to lay the vanes so every flight curls the same way. You will see chevrons, which were his joke, and a pair of dots near the nock on the ones he meant for deer. Last week the Pryce boy came for his order and counted them out along the bench. He said a man could shoot a whole winter with these and never miss what he aimed at. I told him that was the trouble.

Come home when the ice goes off the ford. Bring nothing but yourself, and the dog if he still follows you. The lowest arrow, the solid head pointing left, I have kept for last. Take it down off the nail and tell me which way it is flying.
