Electric guitar tattoo on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A detailed electric guitar fills the back of the hand, showing the fretboard, strings, rows of metal pickup poles, a tremolo arm and the body edge. The shading is smooth and three-dimensional, with deep black shadows and grey metallic highlights. Warm yellow and orange tones add colour to the pickups and body edge, and the design follows the curve of the hand.

The tremolo arm came away in my palm at the Majestic in Leeds, with eleven hundred people stamping for an encore and Marco already turning to his amp as if the guitar were still whole. I caught the little steel shaft before it hit the boards. Nobody in the wings had a spare Strat, and the one he played was the only one he trusted, so I sat on an equipment case with a torch in my teeth and pulled the trem block while the stage manager counted down the seconds on his fingers.

The threads on the post had stripped, and I had nothing in the flight case that would bite. I tore a strip from a roll of gaffer tape, wound it round the shaft to make it grip, and offered it up to the cavity while the crowd chanted his name. The chrome pole pieces of the bridge pickup caught the stage light like a row of bolts on a railway carriage, and I remember thinking that a guitar is mostly a set of small promises that somebody has to keep.
He came off to the wings, took the Strat from me without looking, and played the encore with the arm dragging a fraction flat on every bend. Nobody out front noticed. Afterwards he sat on my case and asked how I'd known how to fix it.
I told him I hadn't. He laughed, slid the broken arm into his jacket pocket, and kept it there all the way to Hull.
