Red devil with electric guitar on ribs

Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A red horned devil with a snarling mouth and clawed hand holds a black star-shaped electric guitar. The devil is rendered with smooth, detailed shading that gives its skin and horns a three-dimensional look. The red ink dominates the design, with black used for the horns and guitar, and the figure fills the frame across the side of the torso.

Don't you sit on that wall, Tom, the devil's in the rhubarb again, and I'll not have him shouting through my kitchen window at this hour. Come here and hear it properly. Gran swore it was true, and she never told a lie that didn't have a tune in it.

Old Mr Crabbe had a garden behind the chapel where nothing grew but nettles and grudges, and one July the nettles started to hum. Every night at the stroke of eleven, a red devil with horns like a ram's and a mouth full of teeth came up through the compost heap, sat himself on the water butt, and played a black guitar shaped like a star. He had no band. He had only the garden and the bats, and the bats weren't impressed.

The vicar went out with a bucket of holy water and came back with his hat on fire. Mrs Penhallow tried a hymn, and the devil played it back at her faster, in a key no organ had ever dared. So Crabbe, who had buried two wives and had nothing left to lose, went out with a cup of tea and sat down on the grass beside him. 'You're flat,' he said. The devil stopped. Nobody had told him that in four hundred years. 'Show me again,' said Crabbe, and so they sat until the cocks crowed, one tuning and one teaching, and the nettles went quiet.

Now mind, the devil never did leave. Crabbe's roses came up the reddest in the county, and if you stand by the water butt at eleven you can still hear one string, very faint, go a little bit sharp on purpose.
