Robed figure with moon and sparks on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A realistic colour tattoo shows a figure in a flowing blue robe holding a large tool or hammer, with a pale moon glowing at upper left and golden sparks scattered through the scene. Soft gradient shading builds the folds of the robe and the dark clouded sky behind. Blues, teals and warm orange highlights dominate, and the design runs vertically along the limb.

The moon had cracked along its old seam again, and by the time Edda Marrow reached the top of the cliff path, the tide was already pulling silver off the sand in long, hissing sheets. Her grandfather's hammer hung from her belt, its head wrapped in sailcloth so it would not ring against the rocks. Below, the fishing boats lay rocking with no light in their rigging, because nobody in Harrow Cove could see their own hands without the moon.

The old man had told her the trick of it on his last winter. You did not mend the moon with pitch or wire. You struck it where the light ran thin, and every blow flung a few sparks back up into the sky, and the sparks took their places like stitches. He had done it for forty years and never once looked surprised by the cold coming off the metal. Edda unwrapped the hammer, spat on her palm for luck, and climbed the last rock where the wind smelled of tar and iron.
The first blow rang out over the water and a shower of gold went up, bright as a struck match, and went on climbing. The second blow turned the sea blue beneath her, a deep teal that lit the hulls one by one. Her arms ached before the third. Somewhere below a child began to cry and then stopped, as if hearing the boats come alive.
By the seventh stroke the crack had closed to a thread of light. Edda sat down on the wet stone with the hammer across her knees and watched the moon brighten until the gulls started up their morning argument. Her grandfather would have said nothing about it. He never did. The sparks were still falling into the harbour, settling on the nets like small warm coins, and she counted every one of them before she went home.
