Elephant and calf with sunset on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A realistic tattoo of an adult elephant walking with a smaller calf beside it, its trunk curled down toward the young one. The skin texture, wrinkles and tusks are shaded in soft browns and greys, while the background sky blends from orange to pale yellow and teal. The subject fills the centre of the forearm, with the sunset glow framing the upper part of the design.

The calf had stopped again at the dry channel, ears folded forward the way it did when it wanted to be told the water was still somewhere ahead. Nell Okonjo's ledger lay open on the bonnet of the Land Rover, its pages lifting in the hot wind, and she let them lift. Eleven seasons of counting herds at the Sabi waterhole had taught her that a stubborn calf was usually right.

The mother, Mbali to the rangers, lowered her trunk until its tip rested on the calf's back. The sun slid behind the acacias and turned the dust the colour of marmalade. Nell wrote the date, then the word walking, then nothing else. The old road to the water had been fenced off two years ago, and the calf had not forgotten it, though nobody had told it the fence was there.
Mbali turned from the track and walked toward the ridge, tusks catching the last of the light. The calf followed close against her left flank, stepping where her feet had stepped. Nell went after them on foot with the ledger tucked under one arm and her boots full of grit, because a count was only worth something if you walked the whole route yourself.
At the top of the ridge the pan was full, a flat sheet of teal sky lying in the hollow. The calf went down the slope first, sliding on its hindquarters and shrieking at the mud. Mbali waited with her trunk raised until both of them were drinking, then lowered it to the water as if she were setting something down. Nell capped her pen and sat in the warm dust to watch the water take the light.
