Rose and mandala sleeve on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, showing a black and grey tattoo on her upper arm that runs toward the elbow. A shaded rose with leaves and a strand of beads sits at the top, above a dense dotwork mandala with a central flower and a smaller rose near the elbow. The shading is soft and tonal, with fine stippled detail in the mandala and smooth gradients across the petals and leaves.

My grandmother's grandmother kept the inn at the summit, and in those days a rose seller came up every spring with a mule and a basket of grey cuttings, though nobody could say where she grew them.

She wore one strand of pearls looped twice around her wrist, like a bracelet of frost. A shepherd's son called Tomas asked what it was worth. She said the price was not in pearls but in the number of nights a man could sleep without listening for the avalanche bell in the lower valley. He laughed, paid her with a sack of salt, and she gave him a rose cut from something pale and cold, telling him to set it on the windowsill facing the drop.
That winter the snow shut the pass for ninety days. When Tomas finally dug his way up to the inn, grown and grey at the temples, he found the rose still open in the frost, its leaves dark as slate. Beneath it lay a circle of beads drawn in ash, and from its centre a ring of petals spread outward, each ring smaller than the last. He understood then that the pattern was a road. Start at the middle, follow the rings out, and the mountain will let you back down to the door.
