Elephant charm anklet tattoo
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small outlined elephant hangs from a thin line that wraps around the ankle, with a looped clasp at the top. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, so the elephant is shown in plain outline. The photograph is taken close up in black and white against a dark, reflective background, with the ankle filling most of the frame.

Pass the jug along the bench, and mind the wasp by your ear, for I have come to the part about the elephant. You will want to hear it while the Discovery apples are still falling, because that is when Ruth Pargeter first saw it, swinging on a length of waxed thread over the pickers' hut at Coldharbour Orchard.

It was the summer of the great drought, and the orchard had gone thin and gold. Ruth was nine, the cook's girl, and she had a brother who sold her things he had found in the lane. The elephant was a little grey thing, hardly bigger than a thumbnail, with its trunk curled up as if it were listening for rain. He had hung it on a line to keep it from the wasps and the rats, and it turned slowly whenever the wind came off the hop fields.
Ruth wanted it more than she had wanted anything. She waited until the pickers went down to the river for their dinner, climbed the ladder, and cut the thread. Then she tied the elephant to her own ankle with a loop of string, and walked the rows all afternoon with it tapping against her ankle bone like a clock that wanted winding.
Her mother found her at dusk and did not scold. She simply took the string, knotted it into a proper clasp, and said that a thing carried on the body is a thing you must give back with your own hands. So in September Ruth walked to the hut, unfastened the clasp, and hung the elephant back on its line. The clasp still opens, you know. That is the point of it. Nobody in this valley is ever fully bound to what they keep.
