A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sefa spun flax every evening on the step of her father's house, so the cord would be long enough for the boat. The village at the marsh edge had no proper rope, only reeds and bad twine, and the men who went out past the bar came back with their hands torn. Her mother had pressed a bead from river clay the spring before, shaping it between two thumbs into a heart, and fired it in the oven with the bread.

"Make the line thinner," said Omar, who mended nets and did not like being told what to do by a girl of twelve. But Sefa would not thicken it. A thin cord, she said, could be wound twice around a wrist and still cut nothing. She threaded the heart at the centre, where the two ends met, and knotted them so the clay sat flat and did not spin.

When the storm came in off the water, the boat did not return. Sefa walked the bar at low tide every day for a month, the cord wound close, the heart resting where it could catch on nothing. The women said to let it go. She did not.

In the autumn a single oar came up on the sand with a strip of flax knotted round its loom. Sefa looked at the heart a long time, then unwound the cord and tied it to the stake at the water's edge, pulling it taut so the clay hung just above the sand, facing the sea. Nobody in the village asked her why she kept walking to the end of the bar after that.
