Elephant head made of flowers and leaves
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows an elephant head formed entirely from botanical elements: a rose across the crown, large leaves forming the ears, daisy-like flowers on the forehead, and a trunk made of stacked blooms that curls down to a smaller flower at the tip. The linework is fine and even, with shading built from small hatched and stippled marks inside the petals and leaves. It is a monochrome design on a plain white background, centred in the frame.

The crate from the spice wharf came in on the Tuesday tide, split along one corner and smelling of wet straw, and you were the only one on the quay who did not step back from it. Your uncle's hand was still on the lid, the brass corners gone green with salt. Inside, between sheets of muslin the colour of weak tea, lay flowers that should not have survived a sea crossing: a rose the size of a fist, daisies with their petals still ridged, leaves broad as a man's palm and folded at the stems.

Mrs Pell, who mended ledgers in the loft above the chandlery, did not ask what you meant to do with them. She cleared the long table, laid the leaves out in two wide fans, and set the rose at the top where a crown would sit. You worked the daisies in below it, then the stacked blooms that shrank as they curled down, until the thing on the table had a head, two listening ears and a trunk that ended in nothing at all. Everything had been packed except the last flower. The note tucked under the muslin said only that the tip was the part that remembered the sea.
You went down to the water with the empty crate and a single daisy from the window box, and knelt on the wet stone where the boats knock together. The tide was turning, drawing the harbour lights out toward the mouth. You set the daisy on the cold water and watched it turn slowly in the eddy, then drift east toward the open channel, where the big ships went out and did not look back.
