Two otters holding hands on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two otters facing each other with their front paws joined, drawn in a single thin black outline with no shading. It sits on the outer ankle and lower leg of a light-skinned person wearing a brown leather boat shoe with a tartan lining. The ink is black on a plain background, and the design is small and centred on the ankle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Our Nan always said the river otters were the only creatures that bothered to hold on to each other while they slept, floating on their backs in the reeds so they wouldn't drift apart in the night. You'll think that's a fairy's tale, and maybe it is, but I heard it from the lock-keeper at Harrowby the summer your grandfather and I came down from Leeds with one suitcase between us and a tin of boiled sweets.

There were two of them at the weir that year, a dog otter and a little female with a torn ear, and every evening they came up beside the sluice gate where the boys fished for eels. Folk would throw them scraps of kipper. Nobody thought to name them. The lock-keeper's wife called them Tom and Dolly, which was no name at all, but it stuck, and by August the whole village was keeping an eye out for them the way you'd watch for the post.
When the flood came in October, Dolly was caught on the wrong side of the weir with the water climbing her. Tom would not leave her. Half the men in the parish stood on the bank with lanterns and shouted, and what they saw in the morning was two heads bobbing in the brown water, each one holding the other's paw, and neither let go until the current eased. I have never told that story in a pub without someone saying I'd had too much sherry. Believe what you like. I believe my own eyes, and I believe in holding on.
