Black dotwork tattoo of an ornate elephant shaped like a hot air balloon across a woman's shoulder blade and upper back.

Elephant hot air balloon on shoulder blade

Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is shown from behind with a large black tattoo of an elephant whose body forms a hot air balloon, spanning the shoulder blade and upper back. The elephant's head, trunk and ears are filled with swirling ornamental patterns, while the balloon body carries dotted bands and the basket hangs below with fine lines for the ropes. The work is entirely in black and grey ink, with stippled dots adding texture and shading across the piece.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lanterns had been rising over the dunes since the autumn market, and Lakshmi had watched every one of them with her trunk raised, as if she were counting. Asha sat on the cool sand beside her, scraping soot from the cook's pot, and listened to the old animal breathe. Lakshmi was past seventy, or near it, and her ears were the colour of wet slate, patterned with the swirls Anand had pressed into her hide with a bone stylus and lamp black. Nobody in the camp could say which of the marks were older than the others.

Anand had promised the showman a balloon that could carry a child. No one believed the oiled silk would hold heat long enough, least of all Asha's father, who sewed the last seam by brazier light and grumbled about wasted cloth. On the night of the new moon they strung the bag over the smoke, and the silk swelled and tugged like a sail wanting the wind. Asha wove the basket from split cane and knotted the ropes in threes, the way her grandmother had taught her to tie a grain sack.

When the bag was full, Lakshmi lowered her head and let the basket settle across her back, as she had carried water tanks for forty years. Anand fastened the last cord to her harness and stepped away. The silk strained upward, the dots along her flanks caught the glow, and for a moment the whole creature seemed to lift out of the dust, ears spread, trunk curled toward the stars.

Then the rope went taut and slack again. Asha understood before anyone spoke that the elephant had been holding the balloon down, not the other way round, and that she would not go up while the camp still needed her to stay. Lakshmi lifted her trunk and laid its tip on Asha's shoulder. The bag rose alone into the cold air, shaped like her own grey body, and the camp fires dimmed beneath it as it drifted north over the dunes, its ropes trailing behind like the lines of a map nobody had finished drawing.
