Ornate elephant with coral flowers on ribs
Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A large elephant is filled with intricate mandala-style patterns in black linework. Two coral-red daisy-like flowers sit beside and behind the elephant, adding colour to an otherwise black design. The photograph is cropped to the torso, with a teal top visible above the tattoo.

Tuesday, 14 March. Mr Carrow says the elephant must look like a palace on the fairground posters, so I have been sent to the stable with a pot of ink and a dozen brushes. Begum stood through the first hour without a fuss, ears folded, while Mrs Oduya traced the lines of the pattern down her forehead in the thick black stuff she brings from Leeds. Mrs Oduya says the swirls are older than any bridge on the Thames and that they keep a beast calm, the way a good hymn keeps a congregation.

By afternoon the outlines were finished and the ink was drying grey on her grey hide. Mrs Oduya wanted colour at the flanks, so Tom went down to the Saturday flower market and came back with a barrow of coral daisies, the sort that hang on in a jar for a week. We pinned them to her side with wet paper and sat on upturned buckets with our tea, watching the light slide off the yard wall. Begum lifted her trunk toward the nearest bloom as if she were sniffing a letter from home.
Carrow came out at dusk, looked at the flowers, and said they seemed cheap. Mrs Oduya simply handed him her brush and told him to try one. He didn't. He stood a long while studying the lines that ran round the eye and down the shoulder, and then he took off his hat. Nobody mentioned it again.
Friday, the fair opens at Hessle. I have written the flowers into the poster myself, in the margin, in the same red as the ink I spilt on my cuff. I expect they will fade before the season is out. Mrs Oduya says that is what they are for.
