The wasps had found the windfalls before Nell did. She stood at the gate of Ostler's Field with the bucket hooked on one finger and watched her grandfather's ladder lean against the old Bramley, its top rung swaying in the heat that rose off the grass like breath. Nobody had told her an orchard could smell so sweet and so sour at once.

Grandad Ambrose kept a wooden elephant on the windowsill of the cider house, carved from a single block of sycamore by a sailor who had owed him money. Its trunk was snapped short and its ears had been worn smooth by years of his thumb. He told her it had walked all the way from Bombay in a crate of tea and never forgiven anyone for it. Nell did not believe him, but she liked the slow way he said it, as though the orchard might be listening.
That afternoon the wind came down the valley and shook the branches, and a shower of Discoveries rattled onto the tin roof of the press. Nell counted them into the bucket, one, two, eleven, and lost her place when a wasp settled on her wrist. She held very still, the way he had taught her. He lifted the ladder off the Bramley and said, "Ears out," which was what he always said when the wind came from the wrong quarter.
By morning the elephant was back on the sill. Its short trunk pointed at the bucket by the door, and in front of it sat a row of the best apples, dewy and unbitten, their stalks set neatly upright. Grandad was already in the field with his back to the house. Nell didn't ask him how it had got there, and he didn't offer to tell her.
