Elephant head on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant head faces forward on the side of a finger, drawn with dark outlines and grey shading on the ears, forehead and trunk. The shading gives the head some depth, and the tusks are left light against the skin. The ink is in greys and black, and the dark leather-like background sets off the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The elephant came out of the beech wood the morning the church bell cracked, and it stood at the edge of the lane as though someone had sent for it. Mother said it was a trick of the mist. Father said nothing. He went back in for his boots, came out with the good axe, then set it down again on the step.

It was grey as wet slate, with ears spread like sails, and its trunk hung in a loop that touched the puddle without drinking from it. Mrs Abbott from the shop brought out a tray of bread and set it in the road. The elephant took each loaf with great care, the way you would take a coin from a child, and folded it away somewhere. My brother Tom wanted to climb on its back. I told him the forest had rules. He laughed at me, and the trunk lifted him by the collar and set him down in the next field, unhurt and astonished.

My grandmother used to say an elephant remembers every path it has ever walked. So on the third night, with the bell mended and a new brass tongue hung in it, I took the lantern and went to the edge of the trees. The elephant was waiting between the trunks. It turned, and I followed, and the path ran where it had always run, under the leaves, down toward the place where the river bends.

At the bend it lowered its head until the tusks were level with my hands. I did not understand what it wanted until I saw the water, black and still, with the old stone steps going down into it. The village had forgotten those steps. The elephant had not. When I turned back, my lantern light lay across the lane as if the road had always gone this way.
