The camel would not kneel for Mr Pryce, and he had paid the Scarborough sands for the whole of a Tuesday. Her name was Hester, and she had walked up from the Clarke brothers' travelling menagerie in Hull with a sack of barley and an opinion about everything. Pryce wanted her folded on the sand like a parcel so the card could say Oriental Wonder in gilt letters. Hester stood up again each time and looked past him at the sea.

I was nineteen and held the bridle because nobody else would. The tide crept up a little with every shout, and I could feel her weight go soft against my shoulder, the way a horse leans when it has decided to forgive you. Pryce gave up at four o'clock and sent us back along the front with the wet plates packed in straw. I thought that was the end of it.
A fortnight later the developer returned a print Pryce had never asked for. It was not the posed sitting but the walk he had refused: Hester in profile, neck high, one foot lifted over the shining sand, her shadow stretched behind her like a long dark rope. He trimmed it close and pinned it above the till.
Customers asked what the animal was. Pryce told them it was a camel that had never once been told what to do.
