A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The elephant had been walking the same road for three days when Ostia's well-keeper finally asked it why. Coming down from the hills toward the salt flats, it had not stopped to drink, nor to eat the thorn-grass, nor to let the drovers' dogs bark it away. It walked with its trunk curled low, as though it were carrying something it had dropped and meant to find again.

The keeper's daughter, Nessa, was sent out with a jar of water and a bundle of figs. She found the beast at the edge of the dry lake, standing where the mud cracked into plates like broken pottery. She set the jar down and waited. After a while the trunk lifted, touched the jar's rim, and went still.

Her grandmother had told her that elephants remember the places where water was once given freely. So Nessa walked on ahead, and the elephant followed her back up the hill to the old cistern that had been dry since the flood years. She uncovered the stone lid with her hands. Under the silt lay a bronze bowl, green with age, that her great-grandfather had buried to keep it from the soldiers.

She filled it to the brim. The elephant drank until the bowl was empty, then turned and walked back down the road the way it had come, its trunk swinging low, and did not look back. The keeper said the cistern ran sweet for another forty years, and that every spring a single elephant track appeared in the salt at the lake's edge, and never a second.
