Curled cat on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a cat curled into a rounded loaf shape, with its head tucked down towards a front paw and its tail wrapped along the body. It is drawn in a thin, even black outline with light grey shading along the belly and haunch. The design sits on bare skin against a plain background, with the edge of a person's hair visible on the left.

Dear Tom,

The cat has moved again. Mr Gale says she's been on the parcels shelf since Tuesday, curled up in the wire basket where the undeliverables sit, and nobody has had the heart to shift her. She goes round herself like a loaf in a tin, nose tucked down under one paw, tail laid along her flank so the whole animal becomes one rounded thing. The porters step over her with their trolleys and say nothing. Mrs Pim, the stationmaster's wife, calls her the Bishop because she sits so still through the sermons of the 6.40.

I told the inspector you'd want her looked after while you're in Carlisle. He said cats are not on the timetable. I said neither are you, and he laughed, which I took as a yes.

The last of the Sunday trains came in grey and late, and when the lamps went out on four I found her still there, warm from the flue, and I sat beside the basket with the lost-property book open on my knee. There were forty-one entries that week: a glove, a clarinet, a child's shoe with the laces still done up. I wrote nothing for her, because there is no column for a cat who only wants to be left where she is.

Come home at Christmas. The basket will still be on the shelf, and she'll still be in it, curled round herself as if she's keeping something safe.

Your sister, Nell
