Shift nearer, the lamp's low and I'll not tell this twice with you fidgeting. You know the Patience, moored below the lock where the willows lean? Her last master was a man called Harold Tennant, who came home from Alexandria with a fig crate, a bad cough and a scorpion in a jam jar lined with wet moss.

He named it Sable, after a horse he'd once lost money on. It lived on the cabin sill between the brass compass and Ada's geranium, and it never once stung anybody. It only ever did one thing. Whenever somebody aboard told a lie, Sable lifted its tail over its back, slow as a question, and held it there until the teller looked away.

Ada hated it. She said the thing watched her like the bailiff did. Harold swore it was a barometer, and for a while it was, because the tail went up before every squall off Chiswick Eyot. Then came the winter the canal froze to the bank, and Harold sold the coal Ada had been saving for the christening and told her the coalman had cheated him. Sable's tail rose so high it touched the lid.

Ada didn't scream. She tipped the jar over the side at the next lock and said, very quietly, that a creature which knew the truth should have the decency to keep it. The tail was still up when the glass hit the water. You can still see the mark on the sill, if you know where to look. Now mind that lamp, and tell me the truth about who's been nicking my biscuits.
