Three fine line waves on the lower abdomen

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line tattoo of three rolling waves in thin black ink sits on warm-toned skin at the side of the lower abdomen. The linework is even and unshaded, and the design is centred across the frame. Part of a light blue denim waistband and a small wooden tag with the number 167 appear at the bottom of the image.

The sea came up the shingle three times before the vicar would begin, and each time old Mags Penhallow clicked her tongue and said the water had heard about the wedding and wanted a look at the groom. Tomas had promised to take her out past the breakwater that afternoon, just the two of them in his father's dinghy, because he said a marriage ought to start somewhere the land could not hear it. She had laughed at him. Now the first wave hissed to a stop a foot from her toes and left a line of weed on the stones like a signature.

Mags pressed a wooden tag into her palm, the sort the harbour office hung on lobster pots, stamped with the number 167. It was the number of the boat her husband had drowned in, she said, and the sea kept a memory for numbers. Edda turned the tag over and looked at the water, and understood that the tide had been counting too.

When the third wave drew back, Edda gathered her skirts and walked into it up to the knee, and the cold took her breath clean away. Behind her Tomas laughed, the vicar cleared his throat, and the water slid back down the shingle to wait for the next one.
