Embracing couple in a starry heart on a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two figures embracing within a heart-shaped starry night sky, one with flowing orange and red hair and the other with blue and green tones and yellow accents. Bold black outlines frame flat areas of colour, with small white stars and coloured dots scattered across the black background. Short coloured dashes rise above the heart like confetti, and the design sits across the top of the foot against a pink backdrop.

Sit closer, you lot, the gulls are quiet tonight so I'll say it plain. There was a woman in Porthmellin with hair the colour of a kiln fire, and she sold pilchards from a barrow on the quay because her father had sold them before her. Every evening she watched the boats come in, and every evening a man called Tobiah Venn rowed his skiff in last, always last, and never once looked up at her.

That changed the autumn the lamp at the end of the breakwater went dark. Nobody could climb to it, the stair had rotted, so the fishermen steered by the stars alone. The sky that week was thick with them, the sort that makes a body dizzy. Tobiah came in one night with no light and no catch, and she was standing at the slipway with a lantern held high, because she had decided, without asking anyone, that somebody ought to.
He stepped out of the boat and walked straight into her, the way you walk into a door you forgot was there. Neither of them spoke. The lantern swung. Up the hill, the Jessop boys let off a box of squibs for the harvest supper, and red and green and gold sparks spat above the roofs and fell like sugar over the water.
When the lamp was mended in spring, Tobiah rowed in first every night after that, and she never sold a single pilchard before he came ashore. The old men said it was the lantern that brought him home. I say the sky knew better than the lamp did, and that's the whole of the tale, so mind the step going down.
