Two hands holding a faceted gem on a thigh

Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows an upper hand with blue-tipped nails pinching a faceted teardrop gem, with a lower hand with red nails cupping beneath it. The hands are drawn with dark linework and hatched shading in pink, pale blue and grey, while the gem is rendered with clear, silver and red reflections. The design fills the frame on a light-skinned thigh, with a patterned fabric visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last thing Papa ever sold was a teardrop of glass, and he sold it the way he did everything, with one hand held high and the other open to catch whatever fell. We were wintering in a shuttered pier pavilion at Morecambe with four horses left, a lion gone to a zoo in Wales, and the big top folded in the storeroom like a sleeping animal. The buyer came in from Blackpool on a Tuesday wearing a camel coat and gloves he removed one finger at a time.

He held the stone up to the window the way you might test an egg. Light broke off it in splinters, red and silver, and skidded across the peeling ceiling. 'Paste,' he said. Papa didn't blink. 'The Duchess wore that at Doncaster in 1931,' he said, 'and she swore it was real, and so did everyone who ever wanted it to be.' My fingers itched. I had worn it myself through the mirror act, under a spotlight that made it look like a drop of the sea caught mid-fall.

When the man counted out his notes, I palmed the glass and let the real one slide from my cuff, the cut stone Mama bought with her wedding money and hid in the sawdust for thirty years. Nobody watches the lower hand. That is the whole trade, and Papa taught it to me before he taught me to walk a wire.

After the man had gone, the tide came in across the sands in long flat sheets. I took the stone out to the end of the pier and held it up against the moon, and the moon, being a showman too, gave it back to me in pieces.
