Endless love script on a finger

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white close-up of a finger with the words endless love written in thin, cursive black script, followed by a small outlined heart at the right edge. The linework is even and fine, with the letters sitting in a gentle curve that follows the shape of the finger. The image is in greyscale against a dark background, which keeps the focus on the lettering and the skin texture.

She turned it over twice before she opened it, because opening paper felt like theft now.

Inside was a single sheet. I will keep the lamp lit in the galley window until the ice thins, the writer had promised, and I will not sleep until your shuttle clears the outer lock. Below the signature the pen had paused, then drawn a small heart, outlined and careful, as though the writer had been afraid of smudging it.

Berth Nine had been scrapped in the year four hundred and twelve. The registry said so in flat grey type. Ottoline nearly filed it under undeliverable, but the registry also listed a retired welder, Idris Coyle, who had moved his pension to the same spoke and never left it. She took the lift up with the envelope inside her coat.

Idris opened the door before she knocked. He held the paper without reading it, then read the closing line aloud in a voice that was almost a laugh. The galley lamp, he said, is still on. I never switched it off. He nodded toward the window behind him, where one yellow light burned against the dark.
