The post came up the causeway once a fortnight in a satchel that smelled of wet wool, and Brother Osric carried it to the scriptorium without being asked. For thirty years the abbey of St Hild and the priory at Coldharbour had written to each other about one thing, which was whose bell rang first at matins, and Osric had learned to read the envelopes by their weight.

The one from Coldharbour was light. Inside, in brown ink that had bled through the paper, the prior had written only two words he had been practising since midsummer, then drawn a small red flower in the corner so that nobody could say he had meant them unkindly. Osric took it up the steps anyway. Abbot Walter read it twice with his spectacles pushed onto his forehead, did not shout, and reached for a clean sheet.
"Dear Brother," he wrote, "we received yours with interest." Then, because he had been a soldier before he was a monk and never quite lost the habit, he drew a sealed envelope with its corner lifting and a dark leaf curling beside it. "Take it down to them," he said. "And tell them the bell is theirs on Sundays. We will ring ours at dusk."
Osric walked the causeway in the rain with his hood up. A week later the satchel came back holding a single sheet folded very small. It said xoxo and nothing else, and the bell at Coldharbour rang late every morning after that, and the two houses were, by all accounts, very fond of one another.
