Black outline heart tattoo on skin with the word equality in cursive script and an equals sign inside the heart.

Equality heart outline tattoo

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line black outline of a heart contains the cursive word equality, which runs across the top right of the heart, with an equals sign placed beneath it. The linework is even and dark, with no shading, and the design sits on plain skin. The photograph is taken close up and straight on, so the tattoo fills most of the frame.

Cook Mattias Holm had served the same two tin plates to the captain and the deckhands for nineteen years, and the crew had never once asked why they matched. Then in the spring of the bad fever, a boy called Tobin came aboard at Lerwick with a cough and a sea chest full of borrowed shirts, and the mate put him at the bottom of the mess table.

Mattias said nothing. He took a stub of pencil from behind his ear and drew on the galley wall, above the stove, a heart with a single unbroken line, the way his mother had drawn them on the flour sacks back in Stavanger. Inside its curve he wrote the word the cabin boys threw at each other like a dare, and under it he drew two short bars.

Next morning he ladled the porridge into bowls of one size, one depth, one measure of butter, and set them down himself, starting with Tobin. The mate grumbled about the lost portions. The captain tasted his, looked at the wall, and said nothing either, which in that ship counted as agreement.

By the time the fever broke, nobody sat at the top of the table any more, because the table had no top. Tobin still coughed at night and still wore the borrowed shirts, but when the bell went he took his bowl from the same pile as everyone else. Mattias wiped the drawing clean in the autumn scrub-down and found that the crew had already drawn it again, in tar, on the inside of the hatch cover.
