Everlong script with a red heart

Lettering · Mixed · Photo

A close-up of a tattoo of the word Everlong in black cursive script, running diagonally from lower left to upper right across the skin. A small solid red heart sits beside the final letters, the only colour in the image. The linework is smooth and even, with the shading kept minimal and the skin background plain and softly lit.

Dear Ruth, I'm writing this on the bonnet of the Corolla outside a petrol station at Mulgara Bend, because the motel's Wi-Fi is more rumour than service and the heat has got into the biro. The road runs straight for ninety miles without a single bend to excuse it, which Dad would have loved.

I found his cassette under the passenger seat, the one he labelled in marker, Everlong, with a red felt heart drawn after it because he never could leave a word alone. I played it at the first dune. The tape hisses like a kettle and the guitar drags along behind the drums, and I cried in a way I didn't expect, the kind where the road goes soft at the edges.

At the pump a lorry driver asked if I was the girl who'd been asking after the old cafe. I hadn't known Dad stopped here every Thursday for eleven years. Mrs Pell at the counter remembered his order straight away: two sugars, and a sausage roll he never finished, leaving the last bite folded in a napkin for the dog who wasn't his.

So I've left the tape with Mrs Pell, along with a note asking her to play it when the heat gets bad. Dad always said the song was about never stopping, but I think it was about the going, and the heart was only ever where he signed his name. I'm heading home by the coast road. Tell Mum I'm fine. Love, Jo
