Expecto Patronum lettering on a hip
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of an arched line of capitalised black serif lettering reading EXPECTO PATRONUM across the outer hip or upper thigh. The letters are solid black with a slight italic slant and even spacing, and the first letters are partly tucked under the edge of dark clothing. The skin is pale and the image has a plain, slightly soft background with no colour ink visible.

The fog had come up off the marsh the way it does in October, thick enough to swallow the lamps on the road, and it was coming in through the broken pane above the stage door as if it had been invited.

She didn't scream. She didn't run for the door. She stood square on the boards, lifted her chin, and said the words her grandmother had taught her when she was small and the cows were restless: expecto patronum. Say it properly, mind, with the weight on the middle. Not like a shopkeeper counting change. Like you mean the thing to come.
The fog thinned at the edges first, then drew back from the windows in a long pale arch, the way a crowd parts for a bride. Something shaped like a hare came out of it, silver and quick, and it ran three laps of the hall before settling on the stage. Nobody in the village will tell you it was a hare. The old men say it was a fox, and the old women say it was a hound with the face of a girl. Enid never said.
So the next time the fog comes off the marsh, you go and stand where she stood, and you say it once, plainly. And if you hear the band start up behind the wall, don't you dare turn round.
