Expecto Patronum script on the wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is raised against a dark background, showing the inner wrist with the phrase Expecto Patronum in black, flowing script. The lettering has fine, tapered strokes, with looping swashes on the capital E and P that extend into the lines of the word. Stacked bracelets of pearls, silver beads and cream enamel sit on the forearm below, and the tattoo is in black ink only.

The mist came up off the loch every evening that October, and every evening Mrs Ferrier stood at the broken gatehouse of Dunreath with her hand raised and said the words as if she were calling a dog to heel. I thought it was nonsense until the week her hip gave out and the keys were left to me.

She had written the phrase on a card in pencil, the capitals swinging out with loops like a bird's tail. 'Expecto Patronum,' I read aloud, and she clicked her tongue. 'Not like that. You have to mean that something is coming for you, and be glad of it.' I stood at the gate with the cold in my fingers and the mist sliding over the wall, and I thought about the grey hare that had followed me up the hill three nights running, always just out of reach.
I said it badly the first time. Nothing came but my breath, and the mist drew closer to the lowest arch. The second time I thought of the hare, its ears flat, its feet not quite touching the heather, and I found I was not afraid of it at all. Something pale unspooled from my mouth, long and silver, and rose over the wall like a ribbon pulled taut, and the mist turned away from it the way water turns from a stone.
In the morning the hare was sitting on the threshold, washing its face. Mrs Ferrier's card was gone from my pocket, and in its place someone had written, in the same looping hand, a single word I did not know: stay. I have not yet decided whether she left it there, or whether the castle did.
