Crescent moon lettering tattoo on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is raised against a pale background, showing a small tattoo on the inner wrist. The design is a crescent moon filled with bold serif lettering that reads I love you to the moon and back, with four small star shapes above and beside it. The tattoo is in solid black ink with no shading or colour, and the subject sits off-centre on the left of the frame.

The lamb had gone through the broken hurdle again, and by the time Ada Pell found her she was a grey shape against the drift at the bottom of Long Field, bleating in a voice gone thin with cold. Ada took the lantern off its hook and went out without her gloves, because her father had always said a gloved hand could not find a lamb's ear.

The moon was a paring of light over Crow Hill, no more than a crescent, and the snow took its colour and gave it back blue. Her grandmother had said the moon went out each month to fetch the dead and came home thinner every time, which was why it waned. Ada did not believe it, but she counted her steps to keep her mind off her fingers.
She found the lamb under the ash tree, half buried. When she lifted it she saw its breath stop in the lantern light and then start again. She buttoned it inside her coat and started back, and her grandmother's voice came to her the way it had come every night at the bedroom door: I love you to the moon and back, and then once more, to the moon and back, for luck.
At the gate the moon had grown a little fuller, or she imagined it. Ada carried the lamb into the kitchen, set it by the range, and rubbed its legs until it stood. Her grandmother's chair was empty. Ada said the words aloud, first to nobody and then to the window, and the lamb, warm now, lifted its head as if it had been answered.
