Eye and hand tattoo on the chest
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small eye with radiating dotted rays sits above a hand with its fingers curled into a gesture, drawn in engraving-style linework with hatched shading. Both motifs are rendered in black ink on pale skin, with the hand outlined in bold lines and the eye in finer strokes. The image is framed from the collarbone to the top of the shirt, so the tattoos sit centrally and fill most of the frame.

You reach the stall at the bottom of the market hall just as the rain starts drumming on the tin roof, and the woman under the tarpaulin doesn't look up from her tray of brass. She has a dozen small things laid out on green baize: keys, a thimble, a hand no longer than your finger, its fingers curled around nothing. Above it all, pinned to a board, hangs a painted eye with lines of dots fanning out from its lid like the rays of a sun that has given up.

"That one's not for sale," she says, when you reach for the hand. "It was my mother's. It's for keeping things quiet." You laugh, because it is raining and you have no patience left for riddles, and you ask what it keeps quiet. She turns it over. Its underside is hatched in fine lines, the wrist ending in a point like a flame cut from paper. "Whatever you're about to say to the man in the blue coat," she says, and nods past your shoulder.
You don't turn round. You hold the hand, which is cold and heavier than it looks, and feel the eye on the board above you as if it has shifted its gaze. Rain runs off the awning in a thin silver curtain. Somewhere behind you a man is laughing into his phone, and the rest of the market keeps on selling things that do not matter.
"How much?" you say at last. She names a price that is nothing, and folds the hand into a scrap of newspaper with the care of someone wrapping an egg. When you walk out into the rain you feel the dots on the painted eye pressing their small points into the back of your neck, counting you out past the gate.
