Spiral mandala on upper back

Dotwork · Back · Mixed · Photo

A spiral that curls into a central flower-like mandala, with layered petal shapes radiating outwards on both sides. The linework is fine and the petals are shaded with stippled dots that fade toward the centre. Soft red wash sits inside the spiral, and the rest of the design is black and grey on a pale, unmarked back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seed vault on Halden Ring has forty thousand drawers, but the only thing children are allowed to touch is the brass spiral on the north wall. I was nine when Aunt Ysolde lifted my hand to it and told me to follow the curl inwards until my fingertips found the red enamel at its heart. The enamel was warm from the lamps. She said the spiral was the ring's first map, drawn before anyone had named the stars it would reach, and that every petal was a day someone had walked.

Now the map is mine. Each year I add a petal to the drawing, working outward from the solid ink near the heart, where our feet have been, into the stippled edge where the dots thin to nothing. The dots are the parts of the route we have only guessed at, and I have learned to love them most. Ysolde used to say a careful cartographer leaves the far petals unfinished so that somebody younger has a reason to keep going.

Last spring the council wanted the outer petals trimmed to save mass on the spine. I took Ysolde's dividers to the wall instead and walked the curve for three nights. The spiral was off by a single degree, a drift that matched the wobble in the ring's spin, and the red wash marked exactly where the old enamel had been relacquered after a leak. I did not trim anything. I wrote the error into the margin in my own hand.

This morning the new drawer slid open on schedule, and a girl from the nursery stood on the step stool with her palm flat against the brass. I told her to follow the curl. She stopped at the outermost dot, frowning, and asked whether anyone had been out there yet. I said no, and that was the good part.
