Lotus and geometric lines on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey lotus flower sits at the centre of the image, its petals built from fine lines and stippled dots. Thin circles, straight guide lines and small triangles radiate around it, forming a geometric framework. The tattoo is photographed in black and white on the outer upper thigh, with a grey sweater at the top edge and a black strap visible on the left.

Brother Anselm kept the brass compass in a cloth bag under his habit, and the abbot allowed me to use it only on the feast of the lotus, when the sun stood square over the cloister. I was seventeen and my hands shook when I set the point on the vellum. The old man watched without speaking, the way he watched weather come over the ridge.

We drew the flower first, always, then built the frame around it. Circle within circle, straight guide lines ruled from the centre with a bone straightedge, small triangles pricked where the lines crossed so the hand would know where to stop. The petals took longest. Each one was dotted in with a quill, a thousand tiny marks that looked like grey breath on a cold window until you stood back far enough to see the shape rise out of them.
On the last evening before the winter fast, I found the compass point had slipped during the outer ring. A bite in the vellum, no bigger than a lentil, sat exactly where the lowest arc should have closed. I was sure I would be sent down the mountain to the mill. Anselm came and bent over the sheet, then pressed his thumb to the hole until the edges smoothed under his skin.
"Leave it," he said. "Every drawing made by a hand has a place where the hand was wrong. Draw the circle around the mistake."
I still draw that way. In the years since I left the mountain, I have ruled a thousand frames, and in each one the outer ring stays open at the bottom, a small gap where the line does not quite meet. The lotus seems to lift itself out of that gap, as if it had been waiting for somewhere to leave from.
