Eye, hands and rays on the back of a hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a single open eye surrounded by radiating lines, with a small sun-like circle above and two outlined hands reaching towards it from either side. A small star sits below the hands, and a row of small marks curves along the wrist. The linework is fine and even, in black ink only, on a pale hand against a plain white background.

The brass eye had been bolted above the signal room door at Gull Point since before the war, and nobody in the village could say who had ordered it cast. Maud Rowntree climbed to it every dusk with a rag and a tin of oil, because the keeper before her had insisted the rays must be kept bright or the ships would steer wide of the rocks.

The winter the Carrick Hope failed to round the headland, Maud stayed up with the lamp for three nights running. Her brother Tom was aboard, and the company had sent no word. On the fourth night the fog thinned and she saw a single point of light low on the water, steady as a held breath, far south of where any sensible captain would sail.
She lifted her palms to the lens the way her mother had lifted loaves from the oven, careful and open, and tilted the mirror until the beam swung out over the swell. The light answered twice, then went dark. Two days later a telegram arrived from Plymouth. The Hope had lost her rudder in the squall and drifted into a bay where a fishing crew had waited, watching the only lamp they could see.
When Tom came up the cliff path with his cap crushed in his fist, he did not look first at Maud. He looked up at the brass eye above the door and touched its rim the way you touch a doorpost for luck.
