Black and grey realism style tattoo of an eye inside a red triangle with radiating rays, above a solid black suited figure, on the lower leg.

Eye in a red triangle with a suited figure

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a shaded grey eye with detailed iris and lid lines, set inside a red outlined triangle. Radiating black rays surround the triangle, and a solid black silhouette of a figure in a suit sits beneath it. The shading on the eye contrasts with the flat black fill of the figure and the bold red linework, with the design centred on the limb against a dark background.

The big top at Harrow and Vell had not filled since the spring the lion died, and by the autumn of the third bad year Mrs Ada Pollard was counting seats instead of tickets. She counted them from the ring with a lantern, the way her father had, and every night there were fewer. The men who had once cheered the flyers now sat at the back smoking and looking up at the tarpaulin roof.

On the eleventh night a man in a black suit came in out of the rain and paid for one seat in the front row. He did not take his hat off. He did not look at the trapeze or the clowns. He looked at the canvas above the centre pole, where someone had long ago painted an eye inside a red triangle, and he nodded as if it had told him something.

After that, the takings rose. Not by much, but enough. Ada noticed the coins grew heavier in the cashbox each morning, and the boys who sold programmes stopped sleeping in the wagons. She asked the strongman what the stranger wanted. 'He wants to see the books,' he said, and laughed, though nobody else did.

She found the man at dawn, sitting alone beneath the eye with the lantern beside him. 'Everything I was sent to count,' he said, 'you have counted already. Tell me, Mrs Pollard, which of your people would you give back?' She understood then that the circus had been watched all along, and that the watching was what kept it standing. She took the ledger down from its nail and tore out the page with the names of the dead. Above her the painted eye blinked once, slow as a lamp being lowered, and the rain stopped.
